President daughter hope say coming out as lesbian go change anti-gay laws

Di daughter of Cameroon president tok say she hope say her coming out as lesbian go help change di law wey ban same-sex relations for her kontri.

Brenda Biya tell Le Parisien newspaper say many pipo dey for her situation and she dey hope to inspire dem.

Di 27-year-old bin share one foto wia she bin dey kiss anoda woman last week for her Instagram account, and dis don spark mixed reactions for Cameroon.

“I dey crazy about you & I want make di world know,” she tok for di Instagram post wit one foto wey show her dey hug Brazilian model, Layyons Valença.

For di interview wit France Le Parisien, she say she no tell anybody for her family bifor she do di post.

“Coming out na opportunity to send strong message,” she tok.

She add say, she see say di anti-gay law wey exist before her papa enta power, dey “unfair and I hope say my story go change am”.

91-year-old Paul Biya, don dey rule as Cameroon president since 1982 and e be one of Africa longest-serving leaders.

Ms Biya say she don dey wit di Brazilian model for eight months and she don already carry her come Cameroon three times without telling her family say dem dey inside relationship.

Di musician, wey dey live for abroad, tok say she don receive plenty messages of support and negative reactions since she post about her relationship.

She dey happy to reveal her status, and add say she bin wan give hope and “send love” to those wey dey suffer “becos of who dem be [and] help dem feel less alone”.

Her parents, di president and First Lady Chantal Biya, later call her and tell her to delete di post. “Since den, na silence,” she tok.

She tok say she bin get her first crush on one girl wen she be 16, but say e dey difficult to express her love sake of di situation for her kontri.

Same-sex relations dey against di law for Cameroon and e dey punishable by up to five years in prison.

Di president or di first lady neva make any official comment.

One goment source bin tell French broadcaster RFI say di mata concern di “private life of adult wey dey live outside di kontri and e no in any way concern Cameroon or di head of state”.

Rights groups wey bin dey condemn Cameroon laws against same-sex relations don dey hail Ms Biya revelation as a courageous move.

But pipo dey ask questions say weda coming out na privilege wey only select few for di kontri fit enjoy.

“Anti-LGBT laws for Cameroon to dey target di poor. Wealth and connections dey create shield for some, while odas dey face severe consequences,” LGBT activist Bandy Kiki bin earlier tok for one post on Facebook.

On Tuesday, one group wey dey support di current laws don file complaint against Ms Biya give di public prosecutor.

Philippe Nsoue from di DDHP Movement tok say dem find justice, dem add say although Ms Biya na di president daughter, “no-one dey above di law”.

“Wenever any Cameroonian citizen or foreigner commit acts wey go against di [LGBT] situation for our kontri, we must seek judicial recourse,” e tok.
