Di group of 35 lawmakers wey call demsef ‘Reform Minded Lawmakers’ wey do public presentation on six draft bills wey don cross first reading for di floor, dey propose to change di two terms of four years wey Nigeria Presidents and govnors dey do now.
Ikenga Ugochinyere, wey dey represent Ideato Federal Cosituency, for Imo State south east Nigeria, and co-sponsor of di bills, tok on behalf of di ‘Reform Minded Lawmakers’ during di presentation to tori pipo.
E say, di aim of di bills “na to redefine and redesign” di political landscape of di kontri on different mata dem wey include governance, economic restructuring, security, security, justice sector reform plus oda social bills wey di group say dey target national unity.
Dem say as part of dia governance and political restructure, dem wan reform di constitution plus amend di electoral act for areas wey concern president, state govnors, local goment chairmen, national plus state assembly.
Di reformers dey propose for di amendment of di 1999 Constitution of di Federal Republic of Nigeria wey don undergo several amendments, to create single term of six years for presidents and state govnors.
Dem also want make di six geopolitical zones dey recognised and make dem create rotation of office of di president, govnors and local goment chairmen among di regions and zones.
Anoda mata wey dem wan amend for di bill na make Nigeria begin conduct di election of di president, govnors, national and state assembly and FCT Area Councilon di same day and at di same time.
Dis six draft bills dey among 50 bills wey di group of 36 House of Rep members dey try push for di floor of di House.
Wetin dem aim to achieve?
Di lawmakers say di koko of di mata wey make dem dey push dis bill na help di kontri survive di many katakata wey e dey face like disunity, weak institutions, insecurity, weak healthcare plus including oda mata dem.
As per mata of election of president, govnors, national and state assembly plus FCT area Council elections wey dem want to occur same day, same time, Ugochinyere and im group say:
“Instead of wasting money dey go from election from one Saturday to anoda, , di kointri go gain more if dem do all di election in one day.
“Di advantage be say, more voters go show on election day. E go get high attention of voters and once dem announce fake results for di lower level of di election, di accreditation go remain di same, and e no go change by di time e reach presidency.”
Di Reform Minded Lawmakers say single day election go save money, bring more participation, and make am get more credibility.
For many years now, Nigeria don do plenty reform conference dem.
