Di Academic staff union of universities (Asuu) dey threaten national strike becos of federal goment failure to implement dia 2009 agreement.

Since 2023, di union and federal goment delegates don dey meet for close door meetings to renegotiate dia agreement wey include improvement in welfare and university funding.

Asuu and federal goment reschedule dia meeting on Tuesday – dis na afta dem don meet twice wit di minister of education for 19 August.

President Bola Tinubu administration don improve di budget for 2024 wit di hope to accommodate Asuu demands but di union still insist on di 15% budgetary allocation for di education sector.

Di administration don also introduce loan funds for students and increase school fees of students for public univerisities so dem go fit fund dia academic year.

On Monday, di minister of education, Tahir Mamman for one interview wit Channels tok say di federal goment dey try to resolve di issue wey dey face so students no go face anoda strike.

“Our president dey veri emphatic. E want stable period and e hold education very dear to im heart and e dey do a lot actually to support education and any time e hear about issues coming up you know in education especially at di tertiary level you know e go intervene very quickly to ensure say dem address di problems, if you take diissue of IPPS for instance,” minister of education tok.

For di past one decade, 2023 remain di only year wey Asuu no go strike.

During di last administration, university lectures down dia tools for eight months (February 14 to October 14), wey be di highest number of days ASUU don go on strike.

Later in October 2022, Asuu suspend dia strike afta National Industrial Court and di Court of Appeal order make dem return to work but di union claim say dem neva resolve dia issues wit federal goment.

Di union don go on strike for 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, and 2022.

Dis strike action by di union dey affect Nigeria education sector, especially di varsity student wey dey stay idle for house during dis period.

In 2009, di union embark on four months strike sake of di intial 2007 agreement wia dem demand for increase of budgetary allocation to education in Nigeria.

Asuu go on five month strike in 2010.

In 2011, di union go on 59-day strike becos goment no fulfill dia promise of 2009.

University lecturers also go on strike for six months as dem dey demand for extension of retirement age to 70, and make goment increase allocation to education from 15% – 20% of di kontri annual budget.

In 2014, dem go strike becos goment no implement di 2009 agreement wey dem reach.

November 2016, di union was on strike for one week.

In September 2017, di union sign anoda MOU to suspend dia 36-day strike wey happun sake of allegations say goment fail to implement agreement from 2009.

Three-month strike bin happun in 2018 sake of poor funding of education and increment of school fees wey goment bin plan.

Anoda strike by di union begin for 2020 wey last for nine months sake of non-payment of allowances to lecturers wey no enrol under di goment payroll system, wey ASUU bin want replace wit dia own.

In 2022, di lecturers down dia tools again for eight months but dis time federal goment refuse to pay dem while dem dey on strike. Afta dem suspend di strike sake of industrial court order, goment later pay dem half-salary.
