End SARS protest in Benin: Godwin Obaseki set Judicial Panel of Inquiry for Edo

Edo State goment don establish Judicial Panel of Inquiry to investigate di circumstance wey surround di #EndSARS protests inside Edo State.

Dis dey happun afta di massive protest wey happun for Benin on Monday and oda palava wey follow so tey di state goment put curfew.

Edo State goment earlier declare 24-hour curfew for di state till further notice.

Di curfew go take effect from 4:00pm on Monday October 19, 2020.

Governor Obaseki say dis panel na in response to di cry of Nigerian youths, as part of di demands of di #EndSARS protesters. Member wey dey di Panel of Inquiry na;

Wetin be di work of di panel

  • To receive complaints & petitions from di general public, particularly victims or relatives of victims of police brutality & extra-judicial killings & to recommend measures, including compensation & restitution, investigation & prosecution, as di circumstances warrant.
  • To give advise on compensation or restitution to di victims, or- where di victim don die- then e go be to di family of di victim, based on condition wey di committee go clearly lay out.
  • To make sure say dem pay compensation within 14 days of di decision to compensate.
  • To recommend and direct di Attorney General to immediately prosecute all persons responsible for di different crimes committed.
  • To recommend measures to stop reoccurrences in di future.
  • To make any oda recommendations to goment in furtherance of di mandate of dis Committee.

Dem don give di Panel 90 days to complete dis assignment. All hearings go dey open to di general public and dem advise all interested pesin to send dia complaints, petitions and suggestions to di Committee.
